The world would be a better place without nuclear weapons, and any weapons of mass destruction, wouldn't you agree?
Entering in the 2016 Disarmament Competition for the United Nations is what led me to this illustration.
I decided to go with my second sketch (figure punching upward), while keeping the idea of a dove rising out of the broken missile in my first sketch. I wanted three things to be the main focus of my piece- the punch, the missile, and the dove. I chose to do a dynamic pose, and figured that the cape of the hero could serve as being all the flags of all countries that are a part of the UN. I wanted to have line work throughout the entire piece, to add to the dynamic feel. The hero themselves would be anonymous, but the cape is what would show that this entity consisted of more than just one nation.
When first coming up with ideas, I knew that what I wanted to represent was a hero. This hero would consist of every country banded together, showing that being united meant that we could take on anything- including nuclear weaponry.
I started off with two initial sketches, horizontal and vertical. My first idea was a hero pushing forward with a single punch, breaking a nuclear missile in half. From the split there would be doves, a symbol of peace, coming out of the wreckage. .
